Human Civilisation ‘will Collapse By 2050’ And Intelligent Life Could Be ‘annihilated’, Shock Paper Warns
We asked Ian Pearson, a futurist with an 85% accuracy record, what new technology we can expect to see by 2050 and how it will change the way we live.
Regulation, more than technology, is a limiting factor in getting delivery drones off the ground. But Pearson said that by 2018, drones will be used to deliver things like packages to hospitals.
But it doesn’t allow delivery drones to proliferate too much. It can be used for some package deliveries, but not for everyday activities like pizza delivery, he said.

Experts Predict What The World Will Look Like In 2050
We already know we’re getting closer to seeing a Hyperloop, a high-speed propulsion system, after seeing the first test by startup Hyperloop One in May. Hyperloop One has partnered with the city of Moscow to bring one to Russia.
Pearson said he hopes to see a short-range Hyperloop ferrying people between the two cities within five to six years.
Pearson said he thinks it’s very possible that computers could reach consciousness by 2025, perhaps even before 2020.
“Google’s DeepMind isn’t there yet, but actually I’m sure they’ll probably figure things out along the way, and by 2020, it’s possible that their computer could be superhuman and be conscious,” he said. “This could be the beginning of the end, really.”
A Glimpse Into The Future Of Our Planet
This prediction actually gives Musk some leeway to realize his vision of getting people to Mars. Musk said at the Vox Code conference in June that he plans to send astronauts to the Red Planet in 2024 so they can get there in 2025.
“First we’ll see people go to Mars, and then robots will do some basic things like [on Mars] basic materials,” Pearson said. “We have to because you can only take so much into space.”
We are already starting to see people using advanced prosthetics. James Young, a 25-year-old biologist, has a personal drone and a prosthetic arm with a built-in flashlight. And a French artist is using a model that doubles as a tattoo gun.
Pearson said prosthetics will continue to advance to the point where people are completely comfortable with the technology merging with the body. For example, he said people could choose to put cybernetic implants in their legs to make them stronger.

Pearson said the most obvious example of this is the exoskeleton suit. Hyundai recently created an exoskeleton suit that can make heavy lifting work easier.
But Pearson said he can also envision other types of advanced clothing, such as leggings that make walking and running easier. Or a Spiderman-like suit made of polymer gel that can enhance strength.
“You can take students into a past environment and show them what was going on, like watching a battle,” Pearson said. “You can explain this kind of thing more easily if they can see it happening, than if you’re looking at a textbook.”
Google’s Expedition Appalready allows students to take virtual reality trips to places like the Great Barrier Reef. The app was first released in beta form in September.
Life Circa 2050 Will Be Bad. Really Bad.
In the next 10 years, it will be possible to draw AR screens through a small bracelet or other piece of jewelry, so there will be no need to carry a smartphone. Companies like Magic Leap are working to bring AR into the mainstream.
Pearson described a ride-sharing system in which people ordered “cheap steel boxes” that could carry people. A system like a pod would be a more cost effective driverless system than something as complex as a driverless car.
Still, with so many automakers and tech companies working on self-driving cars, it seems like we could see one in use within a decade.
In China, a company called Winsoon said it was making 10 3D-printed houses a day, each costing just $5,000. A USC professor is working on a giant 3D printer that can create an entire house complete with electrical and plumbing conduits.
Experts Came Together To Predict What The World Will Look Like In 2050
Pearson said the ability to 3D print affordable housing will be a huge asset as cities become increasingly crowded.
“Between artificial intelligence and robotics, we’re going to have a lot of assistive technology and few companions because a lot of people will live alone,” Pearson said. “So companionship is one of the main targets for future robots.”
Advances in nanotechnology will make it possible to connect our brains to computers and live in a simulated world, Pearson said.
“If you wanted to, you could certainly create something like the Matrix,” Pearson told Tech Insider. Living in a virtual world.
Earth Day 2023: Here’s What The United States Could Look Like In 2050
Pearson said the concept is somewhat similar to what Tesla CEO Elon Musk described when he talked about neural mesh at the Vox Media Code Conference in Southern California.
Neural Lace is a wireless brain-computer system that adds a digital layer of intelligence to our brain. This is a concept that nanotechnologists are working on.
If we can connect people’s brains to computers by 2045, we can use that technology to make people part machine, part human.
So Pearson said he buys Musk’s neural lace theory. But while he thinks the technology will be ready, Pearson said he anticipates government regulations will prevent most people from using it.
What Will World Look Like In 2050?
“I don’t think it’s going to be politically viable any time soon,” he said. “I don’t think we’re going to allow technologically enhanced soldiers with super-advanced brains or executive officers connected to machines.”
We’re really starting to see this with products like Amazon’s Echo, which allows users to control lights and access other information in their homes. By 2040, AI will be built into buildings, so you can talk to the building and request temperature or lighting adjustments.
Pearson said more cities will choose to build taller buildings with floors dedicated to gyms, living spaces and office work to accommodate the influx of people moving to cities over the next two decades.
Pearson said we won’t need to use fossil fuels to power things on earth, like houses and cars, by 2050, but it will still be necessary to power airplanes.
The Cars We’ll Be Driving In The World Of 2050
Improvements in submarine wiring will allow countries to use solar energy to power their entire country from places like the Sahara desert. The ability to harvest solar energy from areas with greater access to the sun will increase our reliance on solar energy over time.
“I’m very optimistic that maybe in 2030 we can start seeing these very large solar farms in the Sahara,” he told Tech Insider.
Nuclear fusion is also on track to power homes by 2045, he added. China achieved a major milestone recently when it was able to recreate solar conditions for its nuclear fusion plant for more than a minute.
Rocket companies like Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and Elon Musk’s SpaceX will push the envelope with space travel, Pearson said, making tourism possible in the year 2050.
City 2050: What Will Your City Look Like In 2050?
“Someone who can afford to pay £100m can spend a week in orbit… but that will only be for the rich in 2050.” he said “It’s not going to be something that’s going to be cheap anytime soon.”

The agreements made – or not made – at COP26 will determine the future of the planet and all its inhabitants for the next decades. For some, the goal of net zero emissions is achievable by 2050. Impractical for others.
Yuval Noah Harari On What 2050 Has In Store For Humankind
If the world can successfully curb its emissions, the planet will stay within 1.5 degrees Celsius of the temperature agreed in the 2015 Paris climate agreement and we could avoid the worst effects of climate change. Fail to do so, and we are headed for a planet warmer than 2C, with disastrous consequences.
