How Will Technology Change Education In The Future
Education takes place all over the world, although the factors that shape it vary from country to country. Driven primarily by technological, economic, environmental and social change, our role as educators is to proactively respond to change to best serve and support learners and enable them to meet future challenges. To do this, we must ask: What does the future of education look like in different contexts? What are the challenges we face? And importantly, how do we actively contribute to the development of education?

These questions were the focus of the SHAPE Education: The Future of Schools event, which took place from 12 to 16 July. The first day of the event was aimed at unpacking the societal issues facing the future of education, demonstrating the complexity of the issues in a global and local context, and identifying ways to address emerging challenges. Our contributors from day one were Mauro F. Gillen, Neil Gibb, Glenn Leadbetter and Teoka Dove.
Mauro’s speech can be epitomized by one of his closing remarks – “Demographic changes are so great that they will transform the educational landscape in the next 5 to 10 years.” With the growing population in Sub-Saharan Africa and the growing population of the world, he emphasized that education must develop differently in different parts of the world. In sub-Saharan Africa, for example, he noted that about 450 million babies will be born in the next 10 years. These children need access to school and education and it is very likely that students will ‘attend’ school online, creating opportunities for digital learning.
He believes that future students will be more diverse. With longer life expectancies and rapid industry changes, Mauro suggests that financial needs and career changes are likely to encourage people in their 40s, 50s and 60s to abandon outdated practices and engage in lifelong learning, possibly online. He concluded by calling for a critical shift in education, saying, “Education in the future will have to help people learn, not teach people.” Several questions came to mind during this conversation, the cost of education, the role of small-scale education, and access and equity in education, which shows how pervasive these concepts are in modern education. Neil’s talk also highlighted the challenges of rapid change as learners must learn to adapt to new ways of thinking and working and develop resilience alongside wellbeing. Unlike Mauro, Neal focused on the present and built his speech around William Gibson’s idea that “the future is already here—it’s just not very evenly distributed.” Neil discussed how technology and the role of digitization in some societies is becoming normalized with the “digitization of all.” Although this brings many benefits, the main challenge is the persistent and increasing commodification of knowledge and education, which can contribute to their uneven distribution. Overall, Neil’s talk offered a tour of the emerging opportunities and challenges in education, including gamification and digital pedagogies, and highlighted the importance of student-centered learning in achieving our future educational goals. “As technology becomes more automated, that heart, the arts, becomes more important.” Neil asked, “How do we build relationships? How do we solve community problems? How do we collaborate together?’

Responding to both Mauro and Neil, Glenn said that while technology can benefit education, we need to help develop critical thinking and literacy in our students by “teaching everyone to look at information and evaluate it for what it is’. Browse unlimited information on the web. For teachers, it also reflects Mauro’s idea about illiteracy that we need to encourage creativity and new ways of working in teachers and students. In saying this, he also pointed out the challenges we face. For example, at the political and institutional level, he argues that stakeholders must embrace changes in education in order to be successful. Teocah reiterated the importance of working with stakeholders and policies, saying that globally not all countries are equally equipped to promote educational change and that “countries in the Global South will look to the Global North for support through development aid.” She reflects on the impact of climate change, energy and technology shortages, and rising poverty on education in the Global South. It also raises important questions about whose future education we envision when we think about educational goals. A key theme that emerged from the discussion was how we can tackle the problems of inequality in education.
