For years, Canada’s new teachers, especially in Ontario, have graduated from a saturated and highly competitive job market, and the situation is unlikely to improve. The Canadian government predicts that by 2028 the number of new graduates will far exceed the available positions.
Finding a permanent teaching position close to home can be difficult, but if you’re interested in moving abroad, the opposite can be true. International and TEFL schools in the Middle East and Asia are hot spots for recent graduates, but they are not the only options. For example, in 2019 New Zealand needed 1,000 new foreign teachers to run schools. Also, the UK needs twice as many STEM and foreign language teachers as it can produce. Canadians and Americans are just two of the many countries actively hiring teachers.
You can start your search on the TeachAway job board, which lists hundreds of jobs abroad, including international schools, government programs, universities and language colleges in over 40 countries. Once you’ve created a landscape idea, there are four main places you can apply for teaching jobs:

If you are looking for a higher starting salary than the public school system offers, an international school is a good option with many options. According to ISC Research, the number of international schools has quadrupled in the last two decades to 10,000 schools worldwide. They employ half a million workers, mostly from Asia or the Middle East.
To get the job, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree in education, some teaching experience, and the ability to demonstrate cross-cultural competence. Want to get divorced? Teachers specializing in secondary education or STEM subjects such as physics, chemistry or computer science are in particular demand.
Working in education abroad is not just the domain of those with a teaching degree. If you have a bachelor’s degree (in any subject) and want to earn a TEFL certificate, you can join the army of recent graduates who go abroad every year to teach English.
With the right qualifications, teaching EFL is a relatively easy task. (Although it should be noted that the industry is notorious for its prejudice against “non-native” English speakers.) Positions often include relocation packages, housing and insurance. Recruiters or employers often also help with visas and expenses.

But that doesn’t mean it’s an easy task. The hours can be long, there can be a lack of support from the school administration, and the students, especially the mixed ones, can be demanding.
Many articles have been written about TEFL (including advice from first-time teachers in the field) about the job search and application process, from hiring to certification, which varies greatly from country to country. That’s why we’ve created several destination-specific guides to finding work and what to expect when you get there:
Established and well-known government-sponsored TEFL programs include the Spanish Assistant Program, English Open Door in Chile, the Japanese JET Program, and the French Foreign Language Assistant Program.
In 2018 RAND Europe surveyed nearly 2,500 scientists in 109 countries, three-quarters of whom had gone abroad to study or work at some point in their careers. Almost all respondents believed that “international movement is important for research”.

Going abroad will not only improve your career prospects, but it can also enhance your research output “by creating new collaborations and developing ideas, skills and experience”. Similar to attending international conferences, working abroad allows you to study background material or connect with experts that would otherwise be unavailable. TeachAway.com, HigherEd Jobs and Times Higher Education global job boards list teaching and research positions at universities around the world.
Not ready to unpack yet? Teaching anything online, from math to English, is a great career opportunity for digital nomads. As long as you have a strong internet connection, this is a career that can take you all over the world, no experience required.
Flexible learning platforms such as Italky and Verbling allow students to connect directly with teachers, but there are also online and virtual schools to choose from.

“Your earning potential depends on several factors, including whether you have an education, whether you are a native English speaker, and whether you have previous experience,” writes Aisha Preece in her article on how to start teaching English online. “If you have all three, you can expect to make between $45 and $60 an hour.”
According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, tourism is the fastest growing sector in the world. It is responsible for 330 million jobs worldwide, or one in 10 jobs.
Although the Covid-19 pandemic and the closure of international borders in 2020 has stopped further growth of the industry, if you want to work abroad in the future, there is no better field to make it happen. Tourism and hospitality is one of the few industries with an abundance of entry-level jobs. While education and experience can be helpful, it is not required to begin with. You can find work with hotels and accommodations, restaurants, leisure providers, tour operators, travel agencies, airlines, cruise ships, and even non-profit organizations.
Want to be a tour guide? Working at a high-end resort? Experience your lower deck on a yacht? The best resources for finding gigs depend on the type of job you’re looking for and the country of destination. For example, HotelCareer.com provides job listings for those interested in working in the hospitality industry, while Allcruisejobs.com is a site for cruise ship positions. It can also be helpful to join online networking groups (such as Facebook, LinkedIn, or Slack), membership-based associations, or listservs specific to your industry, as they often host their own job boards.

Whatever you do, don’t underestimate the value of networks. Those working in travel and tourism value social relationships more, and maintaining good relationships will ensure that a job is created.
From permanent assignments abroad to head office jobs that allow for frequent travel, international development and humanitarian aid are fields of choice for those who want to “travel with a purpose.”

Whether you excel at administration, advocacy, fundraising, or have a more specific education and background in engineering, microfinance, or law, there is a job for you.
However, international aid is a demanding career that can take its toll on your physical and mental health. It can also be a difficult industry to know. It’s a growing field, but as with education, newer graduates are interested in entry-level positions rather than job openings, and experience is often required to land a job. You will need to be willing to spend time volunteering or working abroad and have multiple degrees, with a master’s degree or higher preferred.

But you don’t need an MBA to impress. This is especially true in emerging economies, where jobs are outnumbered by demand, as Ola Mirzoeva explains in her article, Working Abroad: A Blue Ocean Approach.
“[You can] look for opportunities in geographies or industries where you can add unique value, rather than looking in high-end job markets that are full of qualified candidates,” she explains.
In Western countries, many international brands, including the publishing house Penguin Random House, the advertising agency Ogilvy and the grocery chain Aldi, are keen to recruit recent graduates and offer international recruitment programmes.
