What Are The Four Types Of Leadership – Lean is a comprehensive management philosophy, and one important aspect of Lean is leadership. In this article, we will explore how following Lean principles can develop better leaders as measured through the lens of the 8 DISC leadership styles.

The DISC is a behavioral assessment method that was first published in 1928 and has been revised several times since then. Its main concept can be found in Hippocrates’ Four Theorems.

DISC is based on measuring a person’s personality along two axes: on one axis, from carefulness and reflection, to promptness, open-mindedness, and on the other, questions, questions, acceptance, and warmth. The name DISC comes from the four types of behavior defined by this composite: dominance, influence, stability, and conscientiousness.

It should be noted that none of these types are more valuable than others, and that people do not exhibit one type of behavior and that behavior may change as circumstances change.

Jeffrey Sugerman, Mark Sculard, and Emma Wilhelm from Inscape Publishing decided to investigate the leadership styles used by people with different DISC profiles. Based on the data they collected, they came up with 8 leadership styles that they discussed in the 2011 book, The 8 Dimensions of Leadership.

Primitive leaders are quick and talkative. They excel at finding opportunities, pushing boundaries, and promoting bold action.

Energetic leaders are spontaneous, outgoing, and energetic. They show passion, build professional networks, and bring people together to achieve their goals.

Types Of Leadership Styles Every Manager Should Know

Assertive leaders are positive, supportive, and approachable. They are good at recognizing contributions, being approachable, and creating a positive environment.

Intentional leaders are objective and likely to show emotion. They are good at clear communication, ethical analysis, and a sense of calm.

Decisive leaders are persistent and persevere. They set high standards for themselves and others, talk about problems and improve their processes.

For every positive trait, there are also negative consequences. For example, self-motivated leaders may skip sufficient analysis, and determined leaders may appear clumsy. As a holistic management philosophy, Lean takes a clear stance on how to develop and manage a company. I often say that Lean stands on three pillars.

Only when each of these pillars is implemented can a company call itself Lean. The biggest problem is the perfection of the person. It is about creating personal growth by involving every employee in the company to improve the company.

Leader: Excellence requires you to go where no one else has gone. A lean company does not content itself with following best practices, but always strives for improvement and the unknown.

Empowerment: Lean participation enables the level of autonomy, communication, and professionalism every employee deserves. Cooperation and coordination are needed, and this can be further strengthened by using community partnerships as part of the Lean program.

Rigorous, inclusive, and humble: Gemba, in the workplace, is particularly important to Lean. Only in the gemba is the problem truly understood, the slim leader visits the gemba regularly to find out about the people there.

Purpose: At the heart of Lean development is the PDSA cycle, a scientific approach to analyzing and solving problems. Lean requires the leader to be analytical, regardless of the leader’s natural instincts.

Determined: Perfection is a lofty and natural goal for a determined leader to set. In Lean, problems are constantly raised and demonstrated, and process improvement is an integral part of system completion.

Lean leadership excels in areas not traditionally associated with systems-based thinking, such as analyzing and striving for (whole) improvement, as well as valuing each individual’s contribution and promoting the independence, coherence, and achievement of each individual. belonging to the company.

So why isn’t Lean more popular? Lean is generally encouraging in the long run, but it can be difficult to get started. There aren’t many things in Lean that help create a positive environment that energizes people. If anything, Lean’s lofty goals can be daunting. If you can’t force people to try something good, they’ll never know what’s missing.

I have practiced Lean thinking as a leader for several years. The natural leadership style is decisive: analytical, open-minded, never hidden from problems and challenges. In Lean Leadership, I spent hours on gemba and it became my primary method and habit for problem identification and problem solving. This of course opens me up to other people’s input, and I’ve incorporated countless suggestions (mostly from people doing the actual work) into the improvement plans I’ve put together. Lean doesn’t offer as many tools as it does on the analytical side (PDSA), so I’m working on the dynamic and light side – but it’s a side that a successful Lean leader needs to learn.

An intentional leader I have worked with has often been amazed at the positive response he received when he dared to go to the grave. Unfortunately, no matter how hard I pushed, I couldn’t make him a habit. Even with positive results, forming new habits is difficult.

I found that Lean has a lot to offer, especially for powerful and inclusive leaders who interact with people in the gemba and feel that they benefit from the analytical framework that Lean provides. They already feel happy that their team comes up with solutions, and having a good map of how to find effective solutions really unlocks their leadership potential.

The Major Leadership Theories

Executive leaders, on the other hand, were the most difficult to transition to a flexible mindset. To create such leaders, realizing the effectiveness of others and working with others, was a great challenge. If Lean is implemented successfully, management leaders have a greater ability to drive improvement.

To summarize the above, Lean provides a way for all types of leaders to be more diverse and balanced. Identifying people’s leadership styles can help them discover how to inspire Lean and how Lean can help them become balanced leaders. Lean’s weakest point is energy, but the presence of gemba is a good prerequisite for energy, and it takes a lot to improve.

Different Leadership Management Styles In An Organization

Most organizational problems stem from poor management. I’m not talking about leaders, I’m talking about broken leadership models.

We have a bad relationship with the authorities. That’s why we get the leaders we deserve, not the leaders we need. As Thomas Chamorro-Premuzic and Amy Edmondson write, “We are so tempted by our confidence that we end up as self-confident and arrogant leaders.”

We worship leaders as superheroes. However, confidence and competence often do not go hand in hand. Saying “I don’t know” is a sign of strength and growth. Vulnerable and self-accepting leaders lead to better business results.

Not all leaders are created equal. In fact, contrary to what most people think, most leaders are not born, but developed. Start by understanding different leadership styles and which ones work best for you.

We need to stop focusing on the leader (the person) and focus on improving the leadership (the culture).

Leadership is more than a position; it is mental and behavioral. Everyone in your organization, regardless of role or title, can and should lead.

Good leadership is not a result of one person, but a combination of many leaders. This is why most leadership programs fail: they focus on the individual rather than building collective leadership.
