This Is How We Will Live In 2050
We asked Ian Pearson, a futurist with an 85% accuracy record, what new technology we can expect to see in 2050 and how it will change the way we live.
The rules, rather than the technology, are more about determining what can be used from the ground up. But Pearson said that by 2018, drones will be used to deliver things like packages to hospitals.
But he does not think that cargo planes should be allowed to spread too much. It can be used to deliver packages, but not everyday tasks like pizza delivery, he said.

The Environment In 2050: Flooded Cities, Forced Migration
We already know we’re close to seeing the Hyperloop, a high-speed transportation system, after seeing the first tests conducted by the Hyperloop One startup in May. Hyperloop One actually partnered with Moscow to bring one to Russia.
Pearson said he expects to see a short Hyperloop transporting people between the two cities within five to six years.
Pearson said he thinks it’s possible that computers will be civilized by 2025, maybe even as early as 2020.
“Google’s DeepMind isn’t there yet, but I’m sure they’ll be able to figure these things out all the way, and by 2020, their computers might be superhuman and intelligent,” he said. “This could be the beginning of the end, really.”
How Life Will Look Like In 2050
The speculation actually gives Musk some time to realize his vision of taking humans to Mars. Musk said at the Vox Code conference in June that he plans to send astronauts to the Red Planet in 2024 and get there in 2025.
“We’re going to start seeing humans going to Mars, and then robots doing some global things like doing everyday things [on Mars],” Pearson said. “We have to do that because there’s only so much that can be brought into space.”
We are starting to see people using modern devices. James Young, a 25-year-old biologist, has a prosthetic arm with a drone and built-in flashlight. And a French artist uses a plastic device that doubles as a tattoo gun.
Pearson said prosthetics will continue to improve until people are comfortable with the technology. For example, he said people could choose to have Internet-enabled devices on their legs to increase their strength.
Five Superpowers Ruling The World In 2050
The most obvious example of this is the exoskeleton suit, Pearson said. Hyundai has recently developed an exoskeleton that can facilitate weight bearing.
But Pearson said he can imagine other forms of clothing, such as leggings that make it easier to walk and run. Or a Spiderman-like suit made from polymer gels that can improve strength.
“You can take students to situations in the past and show them what happened, like watching a war happen,” Pearson said. “You can explain that kind of thing more easily if they can see it happening, than if you’re looking at a book.”
Google’s Expedition app allows students to travel in VR to places like the Great Barrier Reef. The app first launched in beta form in September.
The Living Spaces Of 2050
It will be possible to put the face in AR through a small bracelet or other jewelry in the next 10 years, making it unnecessary to carry a mobile phone. Companies like Magic Leap are working to bring AR into the mainstream.
Pearson described a bike-sharing system where people would order a “cheap metal box” that could drive people away. A pod-like system would be more expensive than something more complex like a driverless car.
However, with many automakers and technology companies working on self-driving cars, it seems likely that we will see one in use within a decade.
In China, a company called Winsun claims to have built 10 3D-printed houses in a single day, each costing just Rs. 5,000 dollars. A professor at USC is working on a giant 3D printer that can build an entire house, complete with electronics and plumbing.

Pearson said the ability to 3D print affordable housing will be a huge asset as cities become more crowded.
“Between artificial intelligence and robotics, we’re going to have more friendly tech assistants, because most people are going to be alone,” Pearson said. “So friendship is one of the main goals of future robots.”
Pearson said the development of nanotechnology will make it possible to plug our brains into a computer and live in a simulated world.
“Obviously you could do something like The Matrix, if you wanted to,” Pearson told Tech Insider. “Around 2045, 2050, you will be able to connect people’s brains to computers so that they believe they are living in a virtual world.”
How Humans Could Halt Climate Change By 2050
Pearson said the concept is quite similar to what Tesla CEO Elon Musk described when he talked about the bracelet at Vox Media’s code conference in Southern California.
Neural lace is a wireless brain computer system that will increase the intelligence of our brain. It is a concept of nanotechnologists are working on.
If we can connect the human brain to a computer by 2045, we can use this technology to turn people into computers, part humans.
That’s why Pearson says he buys into Musk’s lace theory. But even if he thinks the technology will be ready, Pearson said he predicts government regulations will prevent most people from using it.

“I don’t think it’s going to be politically viable any time soon,” he said. “I don’t think we’re going to allow a military that develops technology that is a highly skilled thinker or a high-ranking officer related to machines.”
We’re already starting to see this with products like Amazon’s Echo, which allows users to control the lights in their home and access other information. By 2040, AI will be built into buildings themselves, so you can talk to the building and ask for temperature or lighting adjustments.
Many cities will choose to build tall buildings with floors dedicated to gyms, living spaces, and office functions to accommodate the influx of people who will move into the city over the next two decades, Pearson said.
Pearson says we won’t need oil to power space, like homes and cars, by 2050, but it will still be needed to run airplanes.
Is This What Sydney Will Look Like In 2050?
The development of undersea cables will allow countries to use solar energy from places like the Sahara desert to power their entire country. The ability to draw solar energy from areas with more access to the sun will increase reliance on solar energy over time.
“I’m convinced that maybe by 2030 we’ll be able to start seeing these massive solar farms appear in the Sahara,” he told Tech Insider.
He added that nuclear power generation is still on track to produce electricity in 2045. In fact, recently , China has made a significant breakthrough in one minute at its nuclear power plant.
Pearson said rocket companies like Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and Elon Musk’s SpaceX will push the envelope with space travel that could make tourism possible by 2050.
