Meanwhile, at the forefront, the number of students seeking engineering degrees grew even faster. At the University of Utah, for example, the college reports that the number of first-year students enrolled in the College of Engineering has grown 178 percent over the past 10 years.

“In some parts of the state, it’s a tremendous growth,” said Val Hale, executive director of the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development, about the growing tech companies in Utah. “There’s no doubt that technology plays an important role in advancing our economy.”
As a result, state universities with engineering schools are seeking $5 million in continued funding from the Utah Legislature this year to help the state’s engineering and computer science programs handle the growing demand for students. The money will allow schools to hire more teachers so they can educate the workforce needed by high-tech companies.
“Fortunately, the number of qualified Utah students who want to study engineering and computer science is growing as fast as the demand for graduates. Currently, Vivint has about 35 openings for software and hardware engineers — not to replace departing employees, but to fill new positions for the company’s expansion. Fowler said they are looking for qualified people, from software developers to mechanical engineers, to help design their home security and smart home devices. Vivint isn’t the only company in the Salt Lake Valley interested in hiring more engineers, he said.

It took an average of 46 days to fill a data engineering position opening, the report said, “which is likely to increase in 2020 as more companies compete to find the talent they need to handle their vast data infrastructure.” Amazon, Accenture and Capital One are all hiring data engineers at higher rates, Dice says.
Kubernetes hands down the fastest-growing technology of 2019, according to a DICE report. “Given the popularity of containers, it’s no surprise that Kubernetes is showing 82% year-over-year growth, with over 67% growth over the next 10 years,” the report says.
Docker Software ranked second in the fastest-growing technology space at 42%, followed by Microsoft Azure (41%), DevOps (32%), React JavaScript (31%) and data science (28%).
The report also examined demand for other skills including data science and machine learning. It predicts that the demand for data science jobs will increase by 38% over the next 10 years, while the demand for machine learning jobs will increase by 37%.
Data Engineers In Hot Demand
San Francisco and New York are the best cities for tech, Dice found. But other cities have seen big gains in tech jobs, including Columbus, Ohio, which posted 32% more tech jobs in 2019 than in previous years. San Diego, California also stood out with a 37% increase in tech jobs. But Jacksonville, Florida, has taken up the cause with a 54% increase in tech jobs, with hiring giants like Bank of America and Blue Cross Blue Shield.
“It’s clear that smaller US technology centers are adopting data-rich roles and capabilities that are critical to growing any tech or non-tech business,” said DHI Group, Inc. said Art Zeile, CEO of Dice’s parent company. “As the demand for technologists continues to grow across the U.S. and the time it takes to fill specialized roles increases, businesses must continue to find ways to stand out.”

Demand for data engineers rose a respectable 45%, the report found, while demand for machine learning engineers rose 89%. Computer vision engineers (146%), search engineers (137%) and security engineers (49%) also have good job prospects in 2020, the report says.
