What Are The Future Jobs In Demand – As the economy has grown rapidly over the past decade, the storm of austerity, automation and e-commerce has created winners and losers, with women particularly bearing the brunt of job losses in the back-office and high-street sectors. But the start of a new decade offers healthy optimism. What new jobs will emerge? And how can we support employees to transition into the future of work?

We analyzed data from the Labor Force Survey to understand which jobs grew and shrank the fastest between 2011 and 2019.

It’s perhaps no surprise that software programmers and developers are the fastest growing occupations, with more than 160,000 new roles created (a 72 percent increase from 2011). IT directors and business analysts are also among the 20 fastest-growing jobs. But sadly, the ‘tech bro’ cliché is true: less than 20 percent of high-paying jobs are filled by women.

Future Jobs In Demand 2025

We’re expected to see more of this high-tech role in the 2020s – as tech giants look to disrupt traditional industries like healthcare and finance.

We are also seeing growth in hi-touch operations. Elementary school and kindergarten teachers, home care workers and caregivers, nurses and nursing assistants are also among the 20 fastest-growing occupations. These roles are gendered and are mostly filled by women. The growth in these roles is in line with changing demographics, particularly an aging and sicker population – a trend that is certain to continue in the coming decades.

The top 20 jobs experiencing the biggest losses include more traditional street jobs such as retail sales assistants, cashiers, bank and post office clerks, and dry cleaners. Over the past decade, 289,000 street jobs have been lost, 81 percent of which were occupied by women. Previous RSA analysis showed that road deaths have a disproportionate impact on areas outside London. Back office roles such as government administrators, personal assistants, telemarketers, and retired employees are also experiencing long-term declines.

We expect this trend to continue over the next decade. But to predict the jobs of the future, we may need to do more than just look at the past. Many of them are not yet widely available, let alone classified in official statistics.

In RSA’s Four Futures of Work report, we used a technique known as morphological analysis to model various scenarios for 2035. The report leverages expert opinion to identify the most impactful and most uncertain drivers of change, from technological advances to the global health economy and the future of unions. We then explore the various ways in which these ‘critical uncertainties’ may play out over time and interact with each other.

While these scenarios for the future of work are not comprehensive predictions, they provide broadly plausible results in a clear and easy to understand manner. Each provides a glimpse of the different types of jobs we can expect to see in the coming decades.

Women have borne the brunt of job losses due to automation and austerity over the past decade, and lost out on new, better-paying jobs. At the same time, a recent OECD study warns that low-skilled workers are three times less likely to be exposed to automation and less likely to participate in training than workers in their workplaces that are more resistant to technological change. These workers face a double dilemma. We need to do more to help them transition to the jobs of the future or they will be ‘left behind’.

France and Singapore are trialling Personal Learning Accounts, which give all employees annual training credits they can use for accredited courses. In Sweden, employers pay to provide comprehensive transition services to workers following a collective grant. Organizations known as job security boards provide displaced workers with information about the labor market in their area as well as training, training opportunities, and financial compensation. This makes the Swedish economy more dynamic. Unions can support layoffs because they know that workers are protected, so companies can easily fire ineffective workers.

New jobs will emerge in the 2020s – from coding to maintenance and new roles based on sustainability. But we need a robust approach to upskilling and reorienting employees towards the transition. Support for lifelong learning is one of the main pillars of the new social contract we must build. In the next few months, the RSA will publish a report describing the design of this social contract: the interrelated rights and obligations, for states and societies, good jobs and economic security, now and in the future.
